What is worse, if your website is not being found, guess who is? Yep, your competition.
A Field of Dreams
Just like your brochure, once you have created your website you need to get it out in front of people for it to do any good. The point of any marketing piece, be it a brochure, TV spot, Yellow Pages Ad, or Website is to draw in new leads, and help convince the lead to contact you and hire or buy from your business.
If your site is not attracting eyeballs, then there is no way it will serve it’s purpose, there is no way it is going to cause the phone to ring, or a new customer to walk in the door.
To get your phone ringing, and to start driving sales your website is going to need exposure. You are going to need to get it out in front of as many people as possible. Actually scratch that, you are going to need to get your website in front of the right people. The right people are first of all your ideal client, second they are your ideal client when they are ready to buy.
How To Be Found Online

But first, we need to make a distinction between Google’s paid service, called AdSense and Google’s free search results commonly referred to asorganic results. See the image below, the paid and organic results are outlined below.

In our business we are specifically interested in the organic search. The organic results are going to give you the biggest bang for your buck. Don’t get me wrong, AdWords can be effective if used properly, but it has become, and continues to be increasingly competitive.
With organic results, you can not pay Google to get these placements. Google uses a mysterious algorithm to determine what order to place websites, this algorithm is only known by a few select people, probably about the same number that know the recipe for Coca Cola. Nobody really knows exactly how they determine placement.
However, through experimentation and observation over the years we do know a few things about how Google selects it’s results. These elements can be broke down into two categories commonly referred to On Site and Off Site Optimization.
